Cambodia, UN Discuss Resilient Health and Social Protection Systems

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, held here at the Peace Palace this afternoon an annual meeting with UN Agencies in Cambodia, led by the Resident Coordinator H.E. Joseph Scheuer.

The discussion focused on two main topics: first, the strengthening of resilient health system toward the universal health coverage, including priority objectives of the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) to strengthen resilient health system toward the universal health coverage and the UN’s support for RGC’s priority objectives, H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Personal Assistant to the Cambodian Premier told reporters after the meeting.

The second topic is the strengthening of social protection system, including the RGC’s priority objectives to develop and expand the social protection coverage which protects all people in Cambodia, especially the poor and vulnerable, and the UN’s support for the RGC’s priority objectives, he added.

According to the assistant, Samdech Techo Hun Sen lauded the achievement of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) 2019-2023, which reflects the efforts of UN agencies as well as the good cooperation and long-term partnership between the UN agencies and government ministries and institutions.

The preparation of UNDAF 2024-2028 is also in progress through inclusive consultations, he said, continuing that Samdech Techo Hun Sen encouraged all relevant parties to continue their cooperation so as to conclude the document as planned in May 2023, which will be a key cooperation framework for the next five years.

Moreover, he pointed out, the discussion increased common understanding on the progress, challenges, and strategic goals of the RGC in the two priority areas (resilient health system and social protection system), which is a key foundation for human resource development to be stated in detail in the Pentagon Strategy-Phase I.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister welcomed the UN system’s commitment to continue supporting the RGC in strengthening the resilient health system toward universal health coverage and in expanding the social protection system with an aim to continue Cambodia’s socio-economic development in a resilient, sustainable and inclusive manner.

He encouraged all relevant ministries and institutions to continue to work more closely with the UN agencies to turn the commitment and support into practical act.
