MORE THAN 5,000 INDONESIANS JOIN IN DEMONSTRATION

JAKARTA, Indonesia Sept 6 (NNN-Bernama) — More than 5,000 people from various Indonesian non-governmental organisations (NGO) today participated in a demonstration in front of the Myanmar Embassy building here to protest against the Rohingya humanitarian crisis in Rakhine, Myanmar.

They started to assemble at noon today and began a series of speeches by several NGO leaders after the Zohor congregational prayers in front of the embassy building.

A check by Bernama found that many of them carried banners and posters urging the authorities in Myanmar to stop the cruelty against the Rohingya community and brought along several photographs showing the cruelty committed.

They also urged the Indonesian government to remove the Myanmar embassy from the country and urged President Joko Widodo to take drastic action and place diplomatic pressure on Myanmar and call on the International Court to take drastic action against the Myanmar government.

After demonstrating for about two hours, the Myanmar embassy later allowed four leaders of the demonstrations and escorted by Indonesian police to enter the office to deliver their protest memorandum.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 police personnel were seen to control the demonstration and set up barbed wire barricades in front of the embassy office to ensure no undesired incidents occurred.

Police Public Relations Head for Metro Jaya District Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono was quoted by on-line media as saying that the demonstration was successfully controlled and ended in peace.

Last Sunday, President Jokowi said Indonesia wanted the Rohingya humanitarian crisis to be resolved objectively instead of resorting to mere rhetorics to criticise the Myanmar government.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi had met and discussed with Myanmar government leaders last Monday before leaving for Bangladesh to assist the country in receiving Ronghiya refugees.
