MYANMAR ACCEPTS RETURN OF 374 REFUGEES

NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar The government on Wednesday said it is ready to accept 374 refugees from Bangladesh who passed its verification process anytime they want to return to the country, the Myanmar Times reported.

U Myint Kyaing, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population, said the 374 are among the 8,032 refugees proposed by the Bangladeshi government to be repatriated.

A majority of the names on the list submitted by Bangladesh could not be verified due to lack of proper documentation that both parties agreed on in a repatriation agreement signed between them in Nov 2017.

The government could not give confirmation when the 374 would come back to Myanmar.

International human rights organisations said refugees cannot be forced to return and the process should be voluntary.

There should also be measures to ensure their long term safety and security.
