OIC TAKES NOTE OF ROHINGYA REPATRIATION WORKING GROUP

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) took note of the agreement between Myanmar and Bangladesh to set up a working group for the repatriation of Rohingya Refugees.

In a statement posted on its website, OIC said the organisation strongly believes that Rohingya refugees must return in safety and dignity to their original places of residence and that the Myanmar government must take concrete steps to address the root causes of tensions in Rakhine state.

The OIC also condemns the indiscriminate violence against civilians and calls upon the government of Myanmar to ensure that security forces act proportionally and with full respect for the rule of law.

The OIC hopes that the working group will be a positive development and encourages further actions that will lead to addressing the discrimination against the Rohingya and longstanding challenges to their social and economic conditions.
