SPECIAL EVENT PAYING TRIBUTE TO INA MARTYRS FROM MALAYA TO BE HELD IN KL TOMORROW

In a solemn tribute to unsung heroes of the Indian National Army (INA) from Malaya, a commemorative event is scheduled to be held at Vista Central, Brickfields here tomorrow (July 7).

A spokesman of the organiser Death Railway Interest Group Malaysia, P. Chandrasekaran, said the event aims to shed light on the secret operations and sacrifices made by civilians turned spies, who faced secret trials and executions under wartime circumstances.

“Their sacrifices, along with many others, have largely gone unrecognised until now. We owe it to these patriots to remember and honour their service.

‘Their stories deserve recognition as acts of bravery, not as acts of treason,’ he told Bernama.

The event will honour the memories of Kumaran Nair and Ramu Thevar, who were executed as spies on this day in 1944.

The event, set to run from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm, will be both in-person and hybrid, allowing participation from across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India.

Online attendees will hear from Prof S. Annam
alai, who uncovered this story 30 years ago and will speak on his findings documented in his three books.

Following him, Vijay Balakrishnan, author of “The Swaraj Spy,” will share his extensive research on this little-known chapter of history.

Participants are encouraged to register starting at 10 am, reflecting the growing global interest in preserving historical narratives from the Siam-Burma Death Railway era and the INA’s covert operations.
