\n One in 3 democracy experts viewed the promotion of democratic principles as South Korea’s most expected role in advancing democracy across the globe, a poll showed Wednesday.<\/p>\n
According to the survey conducted by the Sejong Institute on 30 experts, 32 percent of the respondents expected South Korea to promote democratic values and norms.<\/p>\n
“South Korea is seen as an ideal candidate for advocating democratic principles, sharing its experiences of transition from authoritarian rule to a vibrant democracy,” the institute said.<\/p>\n
Another 24 percent of the respondents cited engaging in active regional and global diplomacy as South Korea’s most expected role, followed by 16 percent with support for civil society and grassroots movement.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in the same survey, 30 percent of the respondents cited authoritarianism and political instability as a challenge to democracy in the Indo-Pacific, while another 23 percent replied “strategic rivalry and security issues across the Taiwan Strait.”<\/p>\n
The institute stressed t
\nhat the “illiberal push” from countries like China, as well as historical disputes and shifting international alliances, contributed to tensions in the region and undermining democratic norms.<\/p>\n
The survey was conducted during the Third Summit for Democracy hosted by Seoul from March 18-20 on the participants and other experts from around the globe to address current challenges to democracy, according to the institute.<\/p>\n
