350 BUMIPUTERA CONTRACTORS UNDERGO COMPETITIVE TRAINING IN SARAWAK

KUCHING, A total of 350 Bumiputera contractors throughout Sarawak took part in the Competitive Contractor Programme to strengthen their knowledge and competencies in construction and procurement.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Second Minister of Finance and New Economy, said the 10-day training also aimed at building a pool of capable, competent and resilient contractors who would grow and compete in the open market.

‘Upon completion of their training, they will be given an opportunity to participate in selective tender in undertaking government projects with value ranging from RM200,000 to RM2.5 million,’ he said when winding up the debate for the ministry at the State Legislative Assembly here today.

As of April this year, he said the state government had also conducted nine series of trainings and development programmes covering aspects of competency, generic and online courses for Bumiputera contractors and suppliers.

According to him, ever since the state governme
nt adopted a new policy on Bumiputera contractors’ participation in the Sarawak government projects, 77.2 per cent of the projects, which are worth RM497 million, had been awarded to Bumiputera contractors.
