Additional K2 tank export deal with Poland likely to be signed in September: DAPA chief

South Korean defense company Hyundai Rotem Co. could sign a deal in September to supply additional K2 tanks to Poland, the chief of Seoul’s arms procurement agency has said.

In August 2022, Hyundai Rotem Co. clinched an executive contract worth 4.49 trillion won (US$3.25 billion) with the Polish armament agency to supply Poland with an initial batch of 180 units, a month after signing the “framework” contract for 1,000 K2 tanks.

The two sides have yet to sign a contract for the remaining units amid issues with the deal’s financing.

“There is a high possibility that the second executive contract for the K2 tank exports will be signed on the occasion of the International Defense Industry Exhibition in Poland this September,” Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) Minister Seok Jong-gun told South Korean reporters on the sidelines of the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris on Tuesday.

Seok said the South Korean government is taking part in the negotiations “with confidence” and aims to clinch t
he second executive contract when the defense exhibition in Poland takes place this year.

Seoul and Warsaw have deepened defense industry ties in recent years since Poland’s decision to buy major South Korean weapons systems in 2022.

In addition to the K-2 deal, South Korean companies secured major deals to supply K9 self-propelled howitzers, FA-50 light attack aircraft and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers to Poland.
