Belt and Road Media Cooperation: Chengdu Initiative Released

The Belt and Road Media Cooperation: Chengdu Initiative was released this week in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province, southwestern China, aiming to strengthen exchanges, tell well the story of the Silk Road, and deepen cultural integration and win-win cooperation.

The Chengdu Initiative emphasised that as BRI enters a new stage of high-quality development, the role of media cooperation in cultural exchange and mutual learning should be further utilised, adhering to the principle of planning together building together and benefiting together; spread fair, objective, and truthful information; avoid bias, fake news, and misinformation; and strive to promote deeper connectivity.

The media should further strengthen cooperation, enriching both the content and form of their cooperation, as well as broaden the channels and platforms that host it and should carry out joint interviews, personnel exchanges, information sharing, programme co-production, technical collaboration, and cooperative publicity.


As we build towards BRI’s next golden decade, the media will work together to pass on and carry forward the spirit of the Silk Road, cement Silk Road friendships, and fulfil the responsibility of contributing to the BRI’s high quality development,’ the initiative underlined.

The media will help countries around the world to jointly achieve modernisation, to build an open, inclusive and interconnected world for common development, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind,’ it stated.

H.E. Li Shulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, emphasised the importance of the 2024 Media Cooperation Forum on Belt and Road, noting that it serves as a significant platform for dialogue and exchange among media professionals from various countries.

‘The Belt and Road Initiative seeks development and mutual benefit, aligning with global trends of peace and cooperation,’ he
said at the forum’s opening ceremony held on Aug. 28.

Delegates attending the forum noted that the Belt and Road Initiative have contributed to a more interconnected world, fostering paths to both individual and collective prosperity.

People’s Daily, in collaboration with the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and People’s Government of Sichuan Province, hosted the 2024 Media Cooperation Forum on Belt and Road attracted over 200 representatives from 191 media outlets across 76 countries and regions, including Cambodia’s Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP).

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), sometimes referred to as the New Silk Road, is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever conceived.

Launched in 2013 by H.E Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, the vast collection of development and investment initiatives was originally devised to link East Asia and Europe through physical infrastructure.
