Cambodia Bags US$32 Million from Rice Exports in JanuaryPolice detain arson suspect in studio apartment fire

Cambodia exported 46,221 tonnes of milled rice in January 2024, a year-on-year increase of 25.2 percent from 36,900 tonnes recorded in the same period last year, according to a Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF)’s report.

The Kingdom earned a total revenue of US$32.6 million from the export of the commodity, up 13 percent, the source said, adding that Cambodia’s rice was shipped to 42 countries and regions.

The European Union was the top buyer of the commodity in January with 25,005 tonnes, sharing 54 percent of total exports, followed by ASEAN countries purchasing 11,999 tonnes, and China and its autonomous regions 5,171 tonnes.

The report stated that other destinations imported a total of 4,046 tonnes from Cambodia.

Rice varieties the country exported included fragrant rice, organic rice, white rice, parboiled rice, and japonica rice, it pointed out.

Cambodia also exported 588,814 tonnes of paddy rice, at an estimated value of US$184 million.

Last year, the country exported 656,323 tonnes of milled rice,
a year-on-year increase of 3 percent, generating US$466 million as revenue.

SEOUL, Police on Monday detained an arson suspect in a studio apartment building fire in eastern Seoul that left a woman with a serious injury to her head after she fell from the fourth floor while attempting to evacuate.

The fire broke out on the third floor of the six-story building in Seoul’s eastern ward of Gwangjin at 4:38 a.m. and was completely put out in about an hour at 5:41 a.m. after 112 firefighting personnel and 27 fire vehicles were mobilized for the operation.

A woman in her 20s living on the fourth floor crashed to the ground while attempting to flee from the fire and was taken to a hospital with a serious injury to the head. Two other residents suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation, while eight other residents safely escaped the building on their own.

Police made the emergency arrest of a resident living where the fire started on charges of arson. The suspect had initially told police the fire broke out for unknown reasons, but later admitted to starting the fire, officials said.
