DP vows to bury railways underground as campaign pledge ahead of April elections

The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) said Thursday it will seek to bury railways in Seoul and other major cities underground, and develop the newly created overland into an environmentally friendly residential complex.

Party Chairman Lee Jae-myung unveiled the campaign pledge ahead of the April 10 elections, during his visit to Sindorim station in southern Seoul, where multiple tracks of express trains run through the bustling area.

The DP said it will push for a revision to the Urban Railroad Act in the upcoming session of the National Assembly, with the aim to ease requirements needed for the project’s preliminary feasibility study and other construction related restrictions.

The ruling People Power Party unveiled a similar plan as a campaign pledge the previous day.
