Establishment of Cambodia-Timor-Leste Diplomatic Ties, an Important Historical Event


Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to Cambodia H.E. Ermenegildo Kupa Lopes has spoken highly of the relationship between the two countries, considering the establishment of their diplomatic ties in 2002 a key historical event.

The relations between Cambodia and Timor-Leste, which turn 22 years old this year, have seen steady progress, especially through the exchange of high-level visits, H.E. Ambassador told the Cambodian state-owned news agency, AKP in a special interview here early this week.

Furthermore, he mentioned the good relations between both nations in the areas of politics, trade, tourism, culture, and so on.

H.E. Ermenegildo Kupa Lopes said that Timor-Leste really appreciates the great efforts of Cambodia, especially Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister, in bringing Timor-Leste into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

He also reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to further strengthen and expand the diplomatic relations with Cambodi
a and remained convinced that with the significant contribution of Cambodia, Timor-Leste will become the 11th member of ASEAN in the near future.

Cambodia and Timor-Leste established their diplomatic ties on July 29, 2002.
