FM Cho stresses need for new approach in diplomacy in AI era

Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul on Wednesday highlighted the need to explore new approaches in diplomacy in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), calling it a “key factor” that can change the world order.

Cho made the remarks during an AI lecture event hosted by the ministry and attended by AI experts, noting that major countries have started to address AI from the perspective of security.

“We are entering a new era where AI brings social transformation comparable to the Industrial Revolution,” he said.

Citing a book by former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, he also noted the impact of AI on international politics, saying it will play a key role in changing the existing world order akin to nuclear weapons in the past.

He then stressed the need to explore new ways in diplomacy in the age of AI.

Cho’s opening remarks were followed by a lecture by Ha Jung-woo, head of Future AI Center at NAVER Corp., on AI and Chat GPT, a chatbot developed by the U.S.-based Open AI.
