French energy giant Total withdraws from Myanmar citing rights abuses

The French energy company Total is withdrawing completely from Myanmar, one year after a military coup unleashed violence and unrest amid a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. The company said on Friday that the move was based on the deteriorating human rights situation and the general state of insecurity in the South-East Asian nation. TotalEnergies also cited pressure from rights groups and shareholders who did not want to see Myanmar’s military rulers reaping proceeds from the gas production.
