GM Korea’s May sales rise 27 pct on strong exports

GM Korea Co., the South Korean unit of General Motors Co., said Monday its sales rose 27 percent last month from a year earlier.

GM Korea sold 50,924 vehicles in May, up from 40,019 units a year ago on increased shipments of SUVs, the company said in a statement.

Domestic sales plunged 51 percent on-year to 2,340 units last month from 4,758, while exports jumped 38 percent to 48,584 from 35,261 over the cited period, it said.

From January to May, its sales climbed 34 percent to 220,562 autos from 164,475 units in the same period of last year.

Domestic sales fell 16 percent to 11,556 in the first five months from 13,825 a year ago, while exports jumped 39 percent to 209,006 from 150,650.

In a two-track strategy, GM Korea sells domestically produced and imported vehicles in Asia’s fourth-biggest economy.

Its lineup is composed of two locally assembled models — the Trailblazer SUV and the Trax Crossover — along with five imported ones — the Colorado pickup, Equinox, Traverse, and Tahoe SUVs, as well as
the GMC brand’s Sierra Denali pickup.

The Spark mini car, Trax compact SUV and the Malibu midsize sedan were part of the lineup, but the company stopped their production in 2022.

Most of the models currently sold in South Korea are from the Chevrolet brand. The Cadillac brand models are available here as well.

GM Korea plans to add more GMC brand models to its lineup, depending on market demand.
