Heat wave to give way to summer monsoon in southern regions over weekend

An unseasonably early heat wave will give way to a summer monsoon in southern regions over the weekend, bringing heavy rains to the southern island of Jeju and other southern areas, the weather agency said Thursday.

The ongoing heat spell, which pushed temperatures in parts of the country to the highest on record for June, is expected to subside after peaking Thursday, the Korean Meteorological Administration said.

By Saturday, southern regions are forecast to come under the influence of a summer monsoon, likely dumping as much as 100 millimeters of rain on Jeju, Busan, Ulsan and other southern areas.

On Thursday, Jeju experienced monsoon rains, with 28.4 mm of per-hour precipitation recorded at some point during the day and heavy rain warnings issued over southern areas.

As a stationary front is forecast to move northward with the development of low atmospheric pressure Saturday, the entire country may experience rain, although the central and capital regions will only see temporary showers and will not
be considered to be under a summer monsoon.

From June 27-30, Jeju and southern regions are likely to experience another round of monsoon rains, while the central Chungcheong provinces are expected to increasingly come under the monsoon influence.

The weather agency said that apparent temperatures will continue to remain high during the upcoming rainy days as rain is expected to drive up humidity levels.
