IBFIM KICKS OFF REFORESTATION PROGRAMME TO CREATE GREENER MALAYSIA

The Islamic Banking and Finance Institute Malaysia (IBFIM) today kicked off its Reforestation Programme (IRP) at Bukit Nanas Forest Eco Park here, to help create a more green and sustainable future for Malaysia.

IBFIM in a statement today said the programme aimed to plant 100 hardwood trees in Sungai Besi Forest Reserve and Forest Eco Park.

“This initial launch involves the participation of Affin Islamic Bank Berhad, Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad, CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad, Maybank Islamic Berhad, and MyAngkasa Amanah Berhad,” the statement read.

In the statement, IBFIM chief executive officer Yusry Yusoff was quoted as saying that IRP marked a significant step towards preserving the well-being of the environment and ensuring a sustainable future.

He said as a lifelong learning institute, IBFIM emphasised the principles of sustainability, well-being, and Ihsan (compassion) as essential for achieving harmonious coexistence with nature.

“Through our collective efforts, we hope we can make a difference in reducing carbon emissions, minimising ecological footprints, and addressing the impacts of climate change,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia (JPSM) Datuk Mohd Ridza Awang also welcomed IBFIM’s collaborative initiative with the department.

He said that IBFIM’s efforts were in line with and supported the Greening Malaysia agenda through the 100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign 2021-2025.

As of July 12, Mohd Ridza said a total of 63.6 million trees have successfully been planted across the country under the campaign, which includes over one thousand tree species.

“This programme contributed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 15, and the planting data as well as information on trees, participants (both corporates and individuals) related to the program can be accessed and viewed through a dedicated website www.100jutapokok.gov.my or the Penghijauan Malaysia application.

“In fact, the public can also share information on their planting activities to the project, which once verified, can contribute to the achievement of the targets,” he added.

Today’s ceremony saw the planting of a Chengal, Meranti Seraya, Tualang, Merbau and Balau Tree, each on behalf of AFFIN Group, Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM), IBFIM, Joint Committee on Climate Change (JC3), and Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA).
