Inaugural Session of Fifth-Legislature Senate to be Convened in Early April


The Inaugural Session of the Senate of the 5th Legislature is scheduled to be held in early April 2024 at the Senate Palace, under the supreme presidency of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia.

The information was shared by the Senate Secretariat General in an announcement made public on Mar. 19.

Cambodia organised the 5th Senate Election on Feb. 25, 2024 with the participating of four political parties, including the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), Khmer Will Party, FUNCINPEC Party, and National Power Party.

The result shows that the CPP won 55 of the total 58 seats, while the Khmer Will Party got the remaining three seats. The FUNCINPEC Party and the National Power Party did not get enough votes to gain a seat.

The Senate of Cambodia is composed of 62 seats, 58 of which are elected in a non-universal suffrage, two are appointed by His Majesty the King, and the other two are elected by the National Assembly (NA).

On Mar. 1, H.E. Sok Eysan and H.E. Heng Hali
m were elected by the NA to serve as senators for the next six-year term, while Princess Norodom Arun Rasmey and Prince Sisowath Thomico were nominated to be senators for the 5th legislature by a royal decree dated on Mar. 6.

The announcement of the Senate Secretariat General also asked national and international journalists who wish to cover the event to register at the Department of Information, Directorate General of Information and Public Relations, Secretariat General of the Senate or via digital system at link https://forms.gle/1dbfLUsbxaTglekUA or QR Code by Friday Mar. 22, 2024.

The interested national and international journalists are required to attach with some documents such as valid journalist ID issued by the Ministry of Information or each media institution, letter of designation or appointement issued by the institution, Khmer ID or passport for foreign journalists, and most recent one photo (4×6 cm).
