Incheon airport runways temporarily closed due to cargo plane’s flat tire

SEOUL, A cargo plane returning to Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, due to mechanical problems suffered a flat tire on landing on Tuesday, leading to the temporary closure of parts of the airport’s runways, the airport authority said.

The cargo plane from the U.S.-based Atlas Air took off from the Incheon airport’s Runway 3 at 5:03 a.m. for Anchorage but returned to the airport about two hours later after developing a hydraulic system problem, according to the Incheon International Airport Corp.

Pieces of tire fell from the plane during takeoff and a flat tire was detected during landing, resulting in tire replacement work on the airport’s Runway 1, the corporation said, adding the aeronautical ground light system was also damaged and was currently being repaired.

As a result, the operation of Runway 1 has been temporarily suspended, causing delays in aircraft takeoffs and arrivals. Runway 3 was also closed for a while to collect tire fragments and resumed operation at 8:35 a.m.

The corporati
on said all the repairs will be completed around 11 a.m. at the earliest.
