Lotte Chilsung to cut plastic use by 20 pct by 2030

Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co., a unit of South Korea’s retail giant Lotte Group, said Thursday it will cut plastic use in its products by 20 percent by 2030.

The move is part of Lotte Chilsung’s efforts to achieve environmental, social and governance (ESG) management by increasing the ratio of recycling materials, the company said in a statement.

To achieve the aim, the beverage firm will change the shape of its plastic bottle products and make their caps smaller to reduce weight, it said.

The weight of Lotte Chilsung’s 500 ml bottle of mineral water fell by 47 percent to 11.6 grams from 22 g in 1997, when its ICIS product was launched. Similarly, the weight of its 14 plastic bottle products decreased from 28 g to 24 g last year.

Lotte Chilsung is one of the South Korean companies with plans to develop various carbon reduction technologies and solutions in the coming years to help combat climate change.
