Over 4.3 Million Unite in a Successful Campaign to Reduce Plastic Usage and Beautify Cambodia

From Sept. 1, 2023, to Jan. 24, 2024, the campaign to reduce plastic use has garnered more than 4.3 million direct participants, including teachers, students, workers, and other contributors throughout the Kingdom of Cambodia, pointed out H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the first meeting of the Thbong Khmum Provincial Government Working Group on Jan. 24, H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, also Chairman of the Thbong Khmum Provincial Government Working Group, stated that day by day, people are increasingly participating in the campaign to reduce the use of plastic under the theme “Today I do not use plastic bags.” “We work together to protect the Cambodian environment,” and “Goodbye to plastic.” So far, the total number of participants has exceeded 4.3 million people.

H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth expressed gratitude to all capital and provincial administrations, including sub-national authorities, for their attention and participation in the campaign to reduce plast
ic use. He urged for increased efforts to reinforce the execution of the initial phase of Cambodia’s Rectangular Strategy, particularly emphasising the Village, Commune, and Sangkat Policy. Safety holds the position of being a 5 + 1 priority for the Royal Government, and there is a push to advance the realisation of the sixth quality, focusing on hygiene, aesthetics, and fostering a healthy environment. The focus is on the environmental strategy, with an emphasis on the campaign “Today I do not use plastic bags” to instill the idea of cleanliness from the heart and help keep Cambodia clean in the long run.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the campaign to reduce plastic use, starting with activities and participation from students’ hearts, is the most crucial factor in supporting the priorities and strategies of the ministry’s environmental chakra. The main angles are clean, green, and sustainable. The strategy aims to make Cambodia, our home, entirely clean.

H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth mentioned, “A c
lean home attracts more tourists and investors to Cambodia.” Simultaneously, he confirmed that the campaign under the theme “Today I do not use plastic” is the first step, and the second step involves cleaning up the environment. The third step is to implement measures to promote Cambodia’s beautiful environment without pollution, ultimately leading to the gradual elimination of plastic waste from Cambodia in the near future.
