PPP to form special committee on economic, social disparities

The ruling People Power Party (PPP) said Monday it will form a special committee to address educational, regional and financial disparities.

PPP leader Han Dong-hoon made the announcement during a supreme council meeting at the party’s headquarters, pledging to “make people’s lives better with sustainable and balanced policies.”

“We are a liberal democratic party, and we need to encourage competition and grow the pie as a whole,” he said. “The bigger the pie, the more there is to share.”

He added that his party will equally prioritize the policies of “growing the pie” and “bridging the gap,” stressing that such policies are significantly different from universal cash handouts.

His remark is seen as an apparent swipe at the opposition leader Lee Jae-myung’s proposal to distribute between 250,000 won (US$182) and 350,000 won to the entire population.

The opposition-led cash handout bill was vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol last week and is expected to be ultimately scrapped in a revote as two-thirds supp
ort is necessary to override the president’s veto. The PPP currently holds more than one-third of the Assembly seats.
