Samsung’s Lee visits the headquarters of German optical firm Zeiss


Samsung Electronics Co. Chairman Lee Jae-yong visited the headquarters of Carl Zeiss AG in Germany last week to discuss the latest trends in the chip industry, the company said Sunday.

Lee visited the company, based in Oberkochen, southern Germany, on Friday (Germany time) and met with Karl Lamprecht, the president of Zeiss, and other key officials, according to the South Korean tech giant.

During the visit, Lee shared ideas on the mid-and-long-term technology road map of the two companies.

Samsung and Zeiss also agreed to broaden cooperation in extreme ultraviolet technology and other cutting-edge chip equipment to strengthen the competitiveness in the foundry and memory business.

The South Korean tech giant plans to lead the market for ultra-fine processing technology of 3-nanometer and below in the foundry sector, and begin the mass production of the sixth generation 10-nanometer class DRAMs within this year.

The Samsung chief also toured production lines for the latest chip parts and equipment at Ze
iss.

“Through the technology collaboration with Zeiss, Samsung will enhance the performance of next-generation chips, optimize the production process, and boost production efficiency to strengthen business competitiveness,” the company said in a statement.

Zeiss plans to build a research and development center in South Korea by investing 48 billion won (US$34.8 million) by 2026, paving the way for closer cooperation with Samsung.
