Season’s 1st heat wave advisory issued for southeastern regions


SEOUL, The season’s first heat wave advisory was issued for southeastern regions Monday, nearly a week earlier than last year, the state weather agency said.

The advisory took effect in several regions as of 10 a.m., including the southeastern city of Daegu and the western parts of Ulsan, as well as in several cities in North and South Gyeongsang provinces, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

A heat wave advisory is issued when the highest apparent temperature is expected to be 33 C or higher for two or more consecutive days. It is also issued when significant damage is expected due to a sudden increase in apparent temperatures or prolonged heat wave conditions.

This year’s advisory came nearly a week earlier than last year when it was first issued on June 17.

Due to high atmospheric pressure affecting the country, strong sunlight, together with an influx of warm air blowing from the west, day temperatures will reach over 30 C across most of the country, and up to 33 C in the inlands of
Gyeongsang Province.
