President of the Cambodian Senate, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, received a courtesy visit from Minister of National Defence of Japan H.E. Kihara Minoru, during which he expressed his hope that Cambodia and Japan will enhance more military cooperation.

H.E. Kihara Minoru expressed his high appreciation for the comprehensive partnership agreement between Cambodia and Japan signed in 2023, through which, he believed, the cooperation between both nations in all domains, especially in the areas of security and national defence will be fostered.

H.E. Kihara Minoru also shared some of current situation in Japan and supported the Royal Government of Cambodia’s stance on the Ukraine War.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that the Cambodia-Japan relationship will not be changed as his successor, Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, will work with his Japanese counterpart H.E. Fumio Kishida to continue this good relationship.

At the same time, the Cambodian senate president expressed his
hope that Japan will further play more important role in peacekeeping operations as Japan was the first country to dispatch its blue beret troops to Cambodia, and thanked Japan for her support to Cambodia’s development.

Cambodia is the first country to support Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy, he stressed, thanking Japan for its cooperation in the training of Ukrainian deminers in Cambodia. He further wished to extend such support not only to Ukraine but also to other mine-affected countries.

Regarding the construction of Funan Techo Canal, Samdech Techo Hun Sen underlined Cambodia’s necessity for self-reliance and welcomed joint investment and cooperation from all Japanese investors and companies for the construction of this key waterway of Cambodia for goods transport by river from all parts of the country to the sea, boosting Cambodia’s economic growth. The Funan Techo canal will contribute to strengthening the role of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, which is being expanded with Japanese fi
nancial assistance.
