SLAM STILL HAS BITE, ROCKS DFP

KUALA LUMPUR, Lively and nostalgic. That’s the best description for legendary rock band Slam’s two-hour performance at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall (DFP) here last Saturday.

Despite having been in the local music scene for over three decades, the group proved they are still a force to reckon with by captivating some 920 fans with their 14 hit songs. Among the audience were popular local artistes including Misha Omar.

Their cheers and applause heated up the atmosphere of the hall as soon as the band members – Shah (lead guitar), Eddie (keyboard), Man (drums), Lili (bass guitar) and Zamani – appeared on stage.

The first segment of the DFP Showcase: Slam concert opened with a selection of the band’s hit songs such as ‘Nurkasih’, ‘Terasing Dalam Sepi’, ‘Kurnia’, ‘Entah Mengapa’, ‘Buat Seorang Kekasih’ and ‘Tiada Aku Jemu’. Vocalist Zamani impressed the audience with his smooth and melodious voice, proving to all he still sounds great.

‘(Do we sound) just like before? Sorry because (now) we are old. Althoug
h we are not as young as before, Insya-Allah, we can still entertain all of you. I hope you are not tired of seeing us,” joked Zamani, eliciting cheers from the audience.

Throughout the performance, Zamani continuously expressed his gratitude to fans who turned up to watch them perform that night and have been supporting the band since its early days.

He also thanked the doctor who treated his scoliosis for attending the concert.

“Thank you, Dr Hisyam, for being here tonight… he was responsible for straightening my slightly curved spine. Although it’s not perfectly straight, Alhamdulillah, it has improved,” he said.

In the second segment of the concert, Slam belted out songs like ‘Kembali Merindu’, ‘Tak Mungkin Berpaling’, ‘Mentari Muncul Lagi’, ‘Rayuan Di Puncak Genting’, ‘Malam Dan Semalam’ and ‘Kembali Terjalin’, prompting the audience to sing along.

“… tonight we won’t be singing ‘Gerimis Mengundang’… because we’ve done it too often,” Zamani said in jest as he left the stage, giving the impressio
n their performance had ended.

This created a bit of a commotion, causing the audience to shout “We want more” repeatedly. The excitement only subsided when the veteran band members re-entered the hall and took their positions once again.

As a bonus, Slam performed two more songs, ‘Mengapa Perpisahan Yang Kau Pinta’ originally sung by Flybaits, and of course their popular hit ‘Gerimis Mengundang’ which received a standing ovation from the audience, who later returned home highly satisfied with Zamani’s iconic vocals and the overall performance of the band.
