SSG.com, Kurly face punitive measures for unfair biz practices

The antitrust regulator said Monday it has decided to impose a fine on SSG.com Corp. and to order corrective measures for Kurly Corp. for shifting marketing costs for products sold on their platforms and other unfair business practices.

SSG.com, a major retail online sales platform, was levied a fine of 59 million won (US$43,510) for forcing 61 suppliers to bear the costs of its promotional events held in October 2019, according to the Fair Trade Commission (FTC).

It also received 652.6 million won from 14 suppliers from May 2019 through March 2023 in exchange for allowing them to use its servers, which went against related regulations, it added.

The measure against Kurly came as it forced three suppliers to shoulder the costs of promotional events in 2020.

It also signed an agreement with 1,850 suppliers regarding incentives for sales growth without practical consultations with the suppliers, a move that “excessively restricted their autonomy,” the FTC said.

The two retail platforms vowed to abide by t
he regulations to prevent any recurrences, according to the regulator.
