CPP Stands at No. 1 on Ballot Papers of Senate Election

The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) comes first on the ballot papers of the 5th Senate Election in 2024.

This morning at its headquarters in Phnom Penh, the National Election Committee of Cambodia (NEC) held a public draw to determine the order of the four participating political parties on ballot papers of the upcoming election.

The public draw was presided over by H.E. Prach Chan, NEC Chairman, and representatives of the Supreme Patriarchs of the two Buddhist denominations in Cambodia with the participation of some 100 representatives of relevant stakeholders.

According to the draw result, the Cambodian People’s Party stands at No. 1, followed by the Khmer Will Party, the FUNCINPEC Party, and the Nation Power Party.

Cambodia is going to organise the 5th Senate Election on Feb. 25, 2024. The election will not be by universal suffrage. Only commune councillors throughout the country and parliamentarians will take part in this election.

The four political parties will compete for 58 of the 62 Senat
e seats. Two of the remaining four seats will be appointed by His Majesty the King and another two by the National Assembly.

For the 4th legislature Senate Election held on Feb. 25, 2018, CPP won all the 58 Senate seats. The other three participating political parties – the FUNCINPEC Party, the Cambodian Youth Party, and the Khmer National Unity Party – got some votes, but not enough to win a seat.

The term for senators is six years, according to Article 102 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
